The "Real Deal": This is the ranch you read and dreamt about as a child.
The Blacktail Ranch is located in a spectacular valley- the historic landmarks are so interesting (the cave is unlike anything I've ever experienced). Several of our party spent time at the Sun Wheel, and one member of our group went fly fishing every day. We went on beautiful hikes, one wonderful horseback ride, and did lots of exploring. The food prepared by the kitchen staff was outstanding, the wrangler Dan really knows horses and was very affable and interesting to talk to. What really made the experience fabulous was the hospitality from Tag and Sandra Rittel. Tag was born on the Ranch (as was his father) and he has assembled a wonderful museum of archeological finds from the property as well as western history. Don't miss it!
For those who linger more on material details, the food was fantastic; the cabins spotless and full of charm; the amenities plentiful. What else would you expect - but trust me, you will barely have time to notice such details as you step into that other world, the world you read and dreamt about as a child.
Tag, the owner, is an original - they don't make 'em like that anymore. His 8500 acres are a world upon itself, where time moves at a different pace and adventure remains part of everyday life.
Everyone and everything was genuine, and true to the core; the family (and that includes what anywhere else might be called "staff", but who, here, are really just extended family) clearly loves living and working at the ranch, and that joy carries over to the lucky guests. The cave, the museum, the tangible memories of exploration and discovery, they form a bridge across time to a bygone world, and the vanished people and creatures that inhabited it.
I was here on a weeklong retreat in the summer of 2015, and still catch myself thinking back to that magical escape. Surrounded by rolling meadows and cool, shady woods, the smell of ponderosa pine in the air; with a crystal-clear creek running through it, down from the Continental Divide, over which the sun sets each evening to give way to a night sky full of stars. Here, every moment takes on a timeless quality.
